Primary Purpose:
Assist in implementing childcare programs and assuring that each child is well cared for and safe. Provide routine care for infants and children in an instructional setting for the Pregnancy, Education, and Parenting Program (PEP).
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Child Development Associate Credential.
Current Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certification
AA, BA OR BS in Child Development, Early Childhood Education or related area preferred
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to read and verbally communicate with children, staff, and parents
Ability to work with groups of children in a positive manner
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
Effective organizational and communication skills
Ability to relate to children and adults with courtesy, respect, acceptance, compassion and patience
Experience:
Two years’ experience working with children.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Support
- Prepare weekly lesson plans and the learning environment with materials to support each individual child’s learning experience.
- Conduct age-appropriate activities for children in care including but not limited to: reading to children and teaching simple painting, drawing, crafts, and songs.
- Observe and monitor children’s play activities.
- Help maintain a neat and orderly classroom including organizing and storing toys, materials, and personal items for children.
- Sterilize bottles and prepare formulas. Prepare snacks, ensuring safe handling of food for children.
- Participate in and complete all Early Head Start Performance Standard requirements including home visits and center visits.
- Follow all guidelines for Texas Rising Star Accreditation.
- Have a positive, respectful attitude towards the special population of adolescent parents and families.
- Demonstrate flexibility and a willingness to further develop skills.
Student Management
10. Supervise and ensure safety and security of children in the classroom, on outings, and to and from outside play areas.
- Assist children with all physical functions such as feeding, diapering, toileting, walking, and standing.
- Identify children with special needs and make recommendations to the Early Head Start Center Director and/or Family Advocate.
- Observe and document developmental progress of children.
- Keep all knowledge of staff and children, and families confidential.
Safety
- Follow established safety procedures and techniques to preform job duties including lifting and climbing.
- Follow district safety protocols and emergency protocols.
- Complete daily health and safety checklist.
- Clean and sanitize all equipment, linens, furniture, and toys (inside and outside).
Other
- Participate in faculty meetings and special events as assigned.
- Participate in workshops, in-service trainings, and make use of all personal growth opportunities, documenting at least 30 hours per year.

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard classroom and nursery equipment such as toys, playgrounds, multiple-rider strollers, etc. Personal computer and printer.
Posture: Moderate standing; occasional kneeling, squatting, bending, and stopping
Motion: Moderate walking, climbing, lifting, balancing, and handling or moving materials
Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying
Environment: Work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather); exposure to noise, frequent exposure to bodily fluids
Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress and self-control in the presence of children.
