Primary Purpose:

Assist in various capacities. Assist teacher in preparation and management of classroom activities and administrative requirements.  Work under supervision of certified teacher.

 

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

High school diploma or equivalent

Valid Texas Educational Aide Certificate (or obtain if recommended for a position) or valid Texas teacher certificate

Meet Highly Qualified requirements (have a minimum of 48 college credit hours, or have successfully completed a TEA approved paraprofessional training)

 

      Special Knowledge/Skills:

      Ability to work well with children

      Ability to communicate effectively

      Ability to maintain emotional control under stress

 

      Experience:

      Experience working with children           

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instructional Support

  1. Assist teacher in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays.
  2. Assist teacher with the scoring of objective testing instruments or work assignments.
  3. Help maintain neat and orderly classroom.
  4. Help with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
  5. Help teacher keep administrative records and prepare required reports.
  6. Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.

Student Management

  1. Address and manage behavior of students. This includes intervening in crisis situations, facilitating focus, running the Student Adjustment Classroom (SAC), and using the point system to incentivize or discipline students as needed.
  2. Assist during check in, patting down, use of metal detector, and searching student belongings.
  3. Conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher; work with individual students or small groups.
  4. Help supervise students throughout school day, inside and outside the classroom; this includes lunch, transitioning to and from the bus, and around the campus.
  5. Keep teacher and principal informed of special needs or problems of individual students.

Other

  1. Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance.
  2. Participate in faculty meeting and special events as assigned.
  3. Maintain confidentiality.

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment; audiovisual equipment.

Posture: Moderate standing.

Motion: Moderate walking; occasional kneeling, squatting, bending, and stooping.

Lifting: light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds).

Environment: Work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather); exposure to noise; work with frequent interruptions.

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress.
