Wage/Hour Status: Exempt

Pay Grade: Teacher Placement Schedule; 187 Days; 8 Hrs.

 

Primary Purpose

To provide a developmental physical education program for all identified students, enabling them to participate successfully in the most integrate setting possible while facilitating the development of motor skills,k fostering social experiences, and promoting a safe, healthy lifestyle.

 

Qualifications:

Education/Certification                                                                                                                                       

             Bachelor's degree in kinesiology / physical education

             Valid Texas teaching certificate in the area of physical education

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

              Adapted physical education program design, planning, development, implementation, and evaluation

              Ability to modify physical education curriculum based on individual student need

              Basic knowledge of motor development and biomechanics

              Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills

 

Experience:

             Experience working with students with various disabilities required        

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Adapted PE Services

  1. Plan and provide adapted physical education services consistent with adapted PE goals contained in student’s Individual Educational Plan (IEP).
  2. Evaluate student progress and determine readiness for termination of adapted PE services
  3. Develop activity modifications and/or alternative activities for individual students; provide equipment needed to execute these modifications or alternative activities.
  4. Collaborate with regular physical education teachers to ensure student success through use of modifications and program planning.
  5. Provide general physical education teachers with updated medical information and restrictions as needed, and address mobility and safety issues within the PE setting.
  6. Consult with educational staff to ensure modifications are being provided appropriately.
  7. Provide staff development training in assigned school(s) to assist personnel with implementation of curriculum modifications, as needed.  

Assessment

  1. Assess students with disabilities to determine eligibility for Adapted Physical Education services.
  2. Participate in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee to assist with the interpretation of assessment data, appropriate placement, and goal setting for students according to district procedures.

Student Management

  1. Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the maturity level, interests, and needs of the students.
  2. Provide structure and establish control of student behavior to effectively implement IEP goals and objectives.

Program Management

  1. Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the adapted physical education program and implement changes based on the findings.
  2. Assist in the selection of equipment and materials needed for students/program.
  3. Develop and maintain effective individual and group relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and those in a supervisory position.

Special Olympics

  1. Organize Special Olympics training sessions/practices.
  2. Lead Special Olympics training sessions/practices across the district.
  3. Manage athletes at training sites and ensure safety.
  4. Coordinate Special Olympics events such as end of year banquet, field day, presentations etc. 

Administration

  1. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records and other documentation required according to mandated federal timelines and district policy.
  2. Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy.
  3. Participate in professional development activities to improve skills related to job assignment.
