Pay Grade: Teacher Scale + Stipend; 187 Day
Primary Purpose:
Plan, implement, and routinely evaluate a comprehensive high school orchestra program that provides students with activities and experiences to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, musical, physical, and social growth. Facilitate cooperation and efficient operation within the orchestra vertical team both MS and HS.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in music education
Valid Texas teaching certificate
Demonstrated competency in instrumental music
Willingness to pursue a CDL (preferred)
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of and expertise in overall operation of an orchestra program.
Ability to manage budget and inventory
Knowledge of state, UIL, and TMEA policies governing orchestra activities.
Ability to interpret policy, procedures, and data
Strong communication, public relations and interpersonal skills
Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
Knowledge of curriculum and instruction
Expertise on one or more string orchestra instruments
Experience:
Minimum of three years teaching experience (preferred)
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Strategies
- Direct and coordinate an orchestral music program including students and staff within high school and middle school feeder pattern. This includes high school string orchestra, full orchestra, any assigned middle school sections, solo and ensemble, all-region activities, and any other duties as assigned.
- Collaborate with other fine arts programs to support a culture of camaraderie and excellence.
- Establish and enforce academic requirements and verify each student’s eligibility to participate in extra-curricular events.
- Help develop, implement and revise the district’s curriculum program and work with the staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods for instruction. Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences and modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).
- Teach orchestra classes, sectionals, small ensembles and individual students including before and after school as required for musical skill development. Prepare students for all performances, UIL and TMEA events, and other competitions.
- Teach any other music classes as assigned including any assigned middle school orchestra sections.
- Support any feeder pattern orchestra director(s) as needed with events and activities.
Student Growth and Development
8. Conduct ongoing assessments of student and ensemble achievement through formal and informal assessments and performances.
9. Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student and ensemble achievement data) to determine program effectiveness and ensure that the program’s development is continuous and responds to student needs.
Classroom Management and Organization
10. Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, musical, and emotional development of students. Be a positive role model for students and support the mission of the school district.
11. Manage student discipline in accordance with campus guidelines and the Student Code of Conduct and Parent- Student Handbook.
12. Coordinate, accompany and supervise students and support staff on out-of-town trip activities. Arrange transportation, lodging, and meals for out-of-town events.
13. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. Supervise assigned music areas / building when in use for activities before and after school.
14. Meet established deadlines, complete entry processes, and arrange for student participation in appropriate UIL and TMEA events.
Budget and Inventory
15. Develop and administer budget, activity funds, and fundraising activities based on documented program needs and ensure that operations are cost effective and funds are managed wisely.
16. Adhere to all district finance policies and procedures while working in cooperation with the fine arts secretary.
17. Maintain current inventory of all fixed assets and oversee cleaning, maintenance, and storage of all instruments and equipment related to the program.
18. Prepare specifications for instruments and equipment as they pertain to student, campus and district purchases and rentals.
19. Manage a music library including ordering, cataloging, and distribution.
Communication
20. Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members.
Professional Growth and Development
21. Participate in staff development activities, meetings and workshops.
22. Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
23. Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, board policy and UIL, TMEA and other relevant organization rules.
Personnel Management
24. Assist with recruitment, selection, training, and supervision of any contracted services staff following campus and district guidelines.
25. Coordinate a private lesson program ensuring completion of reference checks, district required background checks, and any required documentation requested of independent contractors.
Other
26. Support booster club activities and facilitate involvement of parents and community in the orchestra program.
27. Serve as a resource for community and school organizations.
28. Coordinate calendar with other fine arts and school-related activities and with the campus and fine arts administration.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervise any contracted services personnel working in the orchestra program.
Equipment Used:
Personal computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment; recording/public address systems, musical instruments relevant to orchestra.
Working Conditions:
Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting
Motion: Frequent walking and movement related to conducting and playing an instrument.
Lifting: Regular moderate lifting and carrying (15–44 pounds); may lift and move musical instruments, chairs, and music stands.
Environment: Work inside and outside as needed including potential exposure to extreme temperatures (hot, cold, and inclement weather), humidity, and prolonged sunlight; work on uneven or slippery surfaces; frequent exposure to noise
Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours; district and statewide travel
